No Comments Every morning, or nearly as often as I am able, I visit the Astronomy Picture of the Day website. I’ve been doing this for about 10 years or so, and I have found it to be inspirational, educational and occasionally deeply moving.
Here’s the link: APOD
Go, see for yourself, and you can decide if you find it a much more satisfying alternative to Facebook or Twitter or some other social media merry-go-round.

No Comments With all the hype, speculation and downright silliness about the year 2012, or more specifically, December 21, 2012, being the end of the world, I have one simple question to ask: Which day are we talking about here? The December 21st of the ancient Egyptian calendar? Or the Julian calendar? Or perhaps even the Mayan calendar?
The fact remains that each of these calendars, as well as many others, have played fast and loose with the number of days in the year, making it impossible to assume that any one of them could predict the end of times at all. For some background (and to see an interesting mix of light reading and pure mathematics), try this site:
The point is, there is no way of pinning down the exact date of anything, much less the day that marks the end of everything. A giant meteor, previously undetected, could spring out from behind the sun on July 23rd, completely wipe out all living beings on our planet, and no one would be left to raise their hand and complain, “Hey, wait a second! This is way too early for the end of the world. I’d like a do-over, please.”
