First I’ve heard of this, but it seems to be reliable

Lectins from Bananas Help to Avoid HIV Infection

I expect to see long lines at farmer’s markets and grocery stores if word gets out about this…

Interesting notes: Dennis is no longer planning to run for national office in the Democratic party. He can’t expect any party support with votes like this. The vast majority of the “No” votes were cast by white males from the South. I detect a trend here…and suggest that these wolves in sheep’s clothing go ahead and pack up their crap and move across the aisle.

Your party is in the toilet and we’re not going to fish you out

“This is one of those bills that takes a system that is the best in the world and will turn it on its head, and I don’t believe this is what the American people want,” said Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee.

This is what the American people understand and want:

The reform measure would limit how much people can be charged for out-of-pocket expenses. And it would forbid insurance companies to cancel coverage because someone gets sick, deny coverage because of a pre-existing condition or put annual or lifetime caps on coverage.

Deal with it.

One more example of the health insurance industry policing itself…

As per a ruling by an independent hearing judge today, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has been directed to hike the rates of its supplemental Medicare by no more than 3.8%, a figure much lower than the 36.7% the firm had sought.

The shameless robbery and strong-arm tactics of the health insurance cartel needs to be dealt with at the national level, not just at the state and local level.

Just in case you had any lingering questions

Here’s a sample of how your government works to keep you safe:

In August 2008, the U.S.D.A. issued a draft guideline again urging, but not ordering, processors to test ingredients before grinding. “Optimally, every production lot should be sampled and tested before leaving the supplier and again before use at the receiver,” the draft guideline said.

But the department received critical comments on the guideline, which has not been made official. Industry officials said that the cost of testing could unfairly burden small processors and that slaughterhouses already test. In an October 2008 letter to the department, the American Association of Meat Processors said the proposed guideline departed from U.S.D.A.’s strategy of allowing companies to devise their own safety programs, “thus returning to more of the agency’s ‘command and control’ mind-set.”

Dr. Kenneth Petersen, an assistant administrator with the department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, said that the department could mandate testing, but that it needed to consider the impact on companies as well as consumers. “I have to look at the entire industry, not just what is best for public health,” Dr. Petersen said.

Further proof that a vegetarian lifestyle is not only healthier and greener, it’s a lot less likely to lead to permanent paralysis.

Being a senior actually has some advantages

Unfortunately, it’s not always something to be happy about…the number of people affected by this virus is growing worldwide, and the mainstream media has suddenly developed tunnel vision. A few scattered reports of schools closing here and there is about all we’ve heard recently, but the flu rages on and young people are becoming ill at an alarming rate.

Lies, damn lies, and what was that third thing again?

Predicting Flu With the Aid of (George) Washington – NYTimes.com

“Averages don’t tell you very much,” he said of reproductive numbers. “You could have a student transmitting to 15 others, while the average in Queens is 0.1. It’s like putting Bill Gates down in Ethiopia and saying the country has a pretty high average income.”

But one thing remains true: “People have a very weird perception of large numbers,” he said. “If you have 2,000 cases of flu in a country of 300 million, most people think they’re going to be one of the 2,000, not one of the 299,998,000.”

Naturally, they’re using Macs–what else??

Swine Flu Links

Don’t call it “swine flu” despite the fact that we call it “swine flu”

What strikes me about this worldwide distribution of the flu is that it all appears to be in the so-called temperate climate zones. I wonder if there’s a connection of some kind, although I have yet to see anything about this characteristic of this flu outbreak. Time will, almost certainly, tell more about the spread of this disease.

I’m watching/listening to the CDC/Homeland Security/Agriculture Secretary press meeting on MSNBC, and one of the speaker said they wished we wouldn’t call it swine flu and instead refer it to the H1N1 flu. I think they forgot to get their stories straight because they all referred to it as “swine flu.” Politically correct? Who cares? People are dying.

Apparently a pig farm near Vera Cruz, Mexico may be the source of this flu, and this farm has been the subject of several investigations and the target of local public outcry for quite some time.
